Finally Home ~ Reverend William Joseph Kermott
Reverend William [Bill] Joseph Kermott, 86, of Wyocena, WI, awoke to glory March 26, 2009, passing at home while in the arms of his loving wife, Patricia Ann Kermott and surrounded by members of his family.
He was born November 10, 1922, in Milwaukee, WI, the son of late Percival and Ruby Kermott, and younger brother of Robert Kermott. A professional musician, William played violin as a guest soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony at age 17, and sang on several radio programs including the Morning Chapel as well as the Wally White television program. He continued to sing throughout his life and was an active member of the Gospeliers double quartet, performing at nursing homes, and community events. Well known throughout life for his musical ability, his extrodinary sense of humor and gift for punnery was appreciated (usually) by those in his congregations and always by those in his family.
On August 2, 1953, Bill married Patricia [Patty] Ann Pease in the Wyocena Union Baptist Church, where they met while he was serving in his first pastorate. Years later, after more than 50 years of service in the ministry he and Patty returned to the church in Wyocena where he served as a deacon, choir member and soloist.
While serving in the U.S. Army during World War II he read Romans 10:14, "But how are they to hear without someone preaching, and how are they to preach unless they are sent." He asked the Lord, "Why don't more people go into the ministry?" He said the Lord told him, "You are accountable for yourself." He promised the Lord he would enter the ministry when the war was over. He was honorably discharged due to illness so he immediately took up the call and pursued the ministry.
He graduated from Carroll College in 1951 and Northern Baptist Seminary in 1953 and was ordained on June 20, 1953. He served as assistant pastor at the First Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, pastor of the Forest Glen Baptist Church, Chicago, Il., (1953-1963) the First Baptist Church, Ottawa, Il., (1963-1973) the First Baptist Church, Morenci, MI., (1973-1976) and the Brick Baptist Church,Walworth, WI., (1976-1988). Following retirement, Bill joined the Ministers at Large interim program serving churches in Reedsburg, WI, Carthage, Il., Old Stonington, Il. and returned to the First Baptist Church in Ottawa, Illinois. He served one term as President of the Wisconsin Baptist Convention and several times as a camp pastor and/or director for the Conference Point Camp, Blackhawk Camp, and Camp Tamarack.
He is survived by his wife Patty, his daughter Karen and son-in-law Wayne; grandsons Jeremiah, Joshua, and Jason, his son, William J and daughter-in-law Wendy; granddaughters Jennifer and Sarah, daughter Susan and son-in-law Bill; grandsons Bill Jr. and Peter and granddaughter Sheryl, daughter Carole and son-in-law Kirk Sr.; granddaughters Tricia and Olivia and grandson Kirk Jr.; son John and daughter-in-law Amy, grandson Johnny granddaughters Hannah, Emma, Gwen and Manon; son David and daughter-in-law Renee; grandsons William, Ian, David and granddaughters Amber, Rachael, Courtney, and 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother Robert, and is survived by his niece Kathy and nephew Robert and his brothers-in-law Terry (Connie) Pease and Allen (Linda) Pease.
The visitation will be held from 1-3 pm with service to follow on Sunday, March 29, at the Wyocena Community Church. Full military rifles will be presented by the Pardeeville American Legion. Burial will take place at the Wyocena Cemetary. Friends and relatives may call.
